چکیده

There is a constantly growing body of evidence that the minimal symbolic units of speech production are discrete gestures instantiated by mutual constraints between the physical systems involved in the production of speech sounds. By extending this conception of speech processing to more abstract levels of analysis we can understand interface phenomena as due to the interaction between processes triggered by different components of the grammar. Extending the reasoning further, it has been proposed that physiological and cognitive processes interact across speakers involved in a conversation bringing them into aligned cognitive states and facilitating their interaction.

On the Nature of Oral Movement Patterns in Dysarthric Patients Due to Cerebral Vascular Accidents

In order to investigate the nature of motor defects of the speech musculatures in dysar thric patients due to cerebral vascular accidents, non-verbal oral movements were studied in relation to overall intelligibility of speech, coordinative movements of speech organs and swal lowing movements. The results led us to the following conclusions. 1. The degree of individual isolated oral movements w...

Selection - coordination theory

Speech utterances are comprised of hierarchically organized units, such as features/gestures, segments, moras, and syllables. Why these units are organized hierarchically is not well understood; phonological theories vary widely in their treatment of them, and models of speech production ascribe them diverse roles. This paper presents a selection-coordination theory of phonological structure, w...

Timing factors in the coordination of speech movements.

Speech movement coordination involves substantial timing adjustments among multiple degrees of muscles and movement freedom. The present investigation examined the kinematic and muscle timing adjustments associated with the production of select speech movements. For oral closing movements, the timing of the upper lip, lower lip, and jaw peak velocities were found to be tightly coupled, apparent...

Selection and coordination: The articulatory basis for the emergence of phonological structure

Phonological theories commonly analyze speech utterances as composed of hierarchically organized units, such as features/gestures, segments, moras, and syllables, but it is not well understood why this hierarchical organization is observed. Moreover, current phonological theories and speech production models fail to explain cross-linguistic and developmental variation in the organization of uni...

Development of functional synergies for speech motor coordination in childhood and adolescence.

Adults produce rapid, interleaved sequences of speech sounds by controlling the relative motions in time and space of the oral articulators. The control and coordination of these effectors appear to be automatic, effortless, and usually error free. If speech production is viewed within the framework of classical motor control theories, we can infer that adults have organized functional synergie...
